5 Ways to Clear the Clutter
You know the saying ‘tidy house, tidy mind’. Sorry if you’re groaning at the prospect of a tidy up, but we think we have the perfect collection of pieces to make it as painless as possible.
1. A good sort out
Before you can even begin to tidy, you need to have a serious sort out. This is hard for all you hoarders out there, and for the record there is no need to feel guilty. If you can’t let go of something then simply store it away and if it means something to you, then you should hold onto it. However, there is a lot of evidence to show that too much pointless stuff can clutter your mind.
2. Breaking shopping habits – do you really need it?
Clutter doesn’t start in our homes but with our shopping habits. The starting point is to make considered purchases for the long term. It’s hard with busy lives not to just buy new things on a whim or to fulfil a short-term need but It pays to really consider what you are buying and whether today's purchase will simply become another piece of tomorrows clutter.
Be strict with yourself and work out what you really need, consider how you will use it, for how long and how much space it will take up. Follow William Morris’s golden rule: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”. If you haven’t used something in over a few months then seriously consider passing it on to a friend or giving it to charity. Either keep the space completely clear to give you a sense of space, or use it to make way for something you really do need.
Be clever with your interiors by exploring antique markets or second hand shops for vintage items, mixing them with a few considered new purchases. There is a wonderful sense of satisfaction when you stumble upon something beautiful, rewarding a pre-loved piece with a new home.
5. Storage suggestions
Once you’ve sorted through and passed on any items you no longer need, assess your storage space. Do you have practical shelving? Are you making the most of your wall space? We think it’s important that storage shelves and baskets should be both stylish and practical, making sure you get pleasure from keeping items in their place.
When purchasing new items consider the material and the purpose, natural fibres have a tactile pleasing aesthetic. Large baskets are perfect for storing shoes, whilst smaller ones are ideal for hats and gloves. Deep hooks (fixed securely to wall) can hold a lot of coats and can actually enhance an entrance hallway or cloakroom. When it comes to the bathroom, tidy away unsightly bits and bobs behind mirrored cabinets. This also makes things easier to clean.
For the kitchen showcase your ceramics or storage jars on open shelves and make an eclectic display. Don’t worry about open shelves making things too dusty, if you’re using things daily it won’t happen and just factor in a good shelf clean once a month to keep everything looking good.
It’s amazing how a few changes and a refresh can make a difference to your every day.
